Shooting a flying car in Cape Town

I’ve been fascinated by the idea of a flying car since seeing one in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun as a small child. That car was based on the ill-fated AVE Mizar which crashed, killing its inventor.

I had a spare hour with a cherry picker while shooting in South Africa recently and found the perfect location for shooting backplates for an image inspired by the AVE Mizar. I imagined someone building a less than reliable flying car and crash-landing it on its maiden flight, destroying his creation but walking away intact.

I worked with CG artist Simon Nankivell to add Cessna wings to a ’69 Corvette, then photographed account supervisor Stefan Schroder from Langland agency in the role of the hapless flyer.

Thanks are due to many people - John, our local producer, who patiently waited while we drove our cherry picker all around a motorway flyover in the quest for the perfect angle; Ken who risked life and limb with me; Hayley for turning a blind eye; everyone at Happy Finish for helping me make a crazy idea come true and Oscar Ford for advising on the technical engineering aspects of how best to build a real flying car. Don’t try this at home, kids ;-)

Possibly not the standard way to use a cherry picker...
